The
Riddle family has always been an established family in _________. My
Father serves as the Minister of War, as his father before him and his
father before him and so on. While Mother doesn't hold a position such
as that within the government, she is still a figurehead among the other
aristocratic families and women. Safe to say, the Riddle family is no
stranger to the spotlight.
I am the youngest of the family and
the only daughter on top of that; I have three older brothers. My
parents took pride in their positions within the house of nobles so when
we were all named, the names meant something.
Kaden is
the eldest, his name means 'Son of Cadan', can you guess what father's
name is? Malachai is the second eldest, his name means 'Angel or
messenger'.
Malachai's
birth was a bit of a miracle, he almost didn't make it and my mother
believes our Lord ensured his birth because he had a plan for the him,
mom got to name him.
Last would be
Cruise and
myself, twins, Cruise born just before me. His name means 'a very bold
or daring person' while my name means 'intelligent'. Dad has always
boasted that while Kaden does a great job in picking up the Riddle
mantle, Cruise had a look of challenge in his eyes when he was born
while I looked calculating.
There was never a difference
between the treatment of myself to my brothers. I had no excuse for
scoring lower than they did in athletics or academics. I was raised to
behave as much like a "prince" as my brothers. My mother never really
complained about it, save for when I was younger and I would tatter my
dresses when I would play with the boy. Then again, she also always had
Malachai whom was most like a 'girl', being more openly interested in
things like sweets and cute things. While Father made sure he kept up
with the rest of us, he allowed my mother to at least have a 'daughter'
through one of the boys, even if he wasn't the most pleased about it.
Growing
up, evenings were spent playing tactical-style games, whether chess,
checkers, go and other games. It was all about out maneuvering an
oppotent, to out-think them. I quickly excelled against all but Kaden,
whom was my father's biggest rival. For as strict as Kaden could be, he
(and the others) had a soft spot for their sister and even when he
would beat me in a game, you would think he was playing just a normal
game against his kid sister, not out-witting her in a game meant to
train the greatest of military tacticians.
We've always been a
family to keep up appearances among the local community as a whole. Top
in grades, sports, volunteering, hosting various events; our schedules
were always busy. We were expected to be in the best of manners at any
turn of the day because you never know who's watching.
History
To say that Mailyth is a bit of a troubled child would be a harsh
understatement, but upbringing is important at a young age and she
didn't quite get the best. Mailyth is the product of a demon, a lust
demon to be exact. A foolish Satyr had summoned one up one night,
hoping to sate his desires, but instead she possessed him and went off
to have a "good night out on the town".
Mailyth's mother was just
a simple farm girl, living at home for, though she had reached
womanhood and had recently become engaged. Though a simple family,
their daughter was beautiful and kind, something that attracted many,
even those of nobility and it was a Duke's son that had won the heart of
the parents and the girl. Unfortunately, she was too dutiful in her
work one night when the possessed Satyr had discovered her working alone
in the stables.
The Satyr took to his pleasures as the woman
tried in vain to fight him off and once he was finished, the demon
vanished leaving the Satyr weak and allowing the woman to scream for
help. Her father killed the vulnerable Satyr, but the damage had been
done.
Upon hearing what had happened to the woman, the Duke
called off the engagement and upon hearing that she was pregnant, her
father insisted that her daughter seek help to rid of the disgusting
spawn that was within her. Her mother was kind though and chose to keep
the child, saying that though what happened to her may have ruined an
easy life for her family and family, she did not wish to ruin a life
that could mean something to the world by destroying it before it had a
chance.
Unfortunately for Mailyth, that hope would be short
lived. Her mother went into labor early, not out of accident but due to
what was gestating inside of her. There were many complications during
the birth including internal tears and stress on the mother's body
which would lead to her death soon after bringing the child to the
world.
Mailyth's grandparents were both furious and terrified of
the child that cried before them. The infant, though small, was large
than a human newborn and was covered in a soft white fuzz from the waist
down to the ankles where a pair of black pearl hooves shone bright as
day. The child's legs were digitigrade, or bent backwards at the knee
like that of a goat; the Satyr part of her mocked them openly.
The
face of the child was strikingly like that of their daughter's when she
was an infant, the faint sign of red hair giving away that she was
truly their granddaughter for the older woman once had very vibrant crimson locks. When the child slowly stopped crying on its
own, something that startled the grandparents, nothing prepared them for
the pink orbs that would blink open to stare up at them as though it
were fully aware of what was going on in the world. It didn't help that
there were also a pair of tiny, soft lumps for horns protruding from
top of her head and her ears were pointed, rather than rounded.
The
only thing the couple did before throwing the child away was name her;
Mailyth they called her, or death child for it was she that ruined the
rich future they could have had, it was she that took their daughter
away from them.
Leaving late one night, the took the infant far
away, a three days ride, to leave her in an old decreped graveyard that
had been known for hauntings, deaths and just bad things all around.
Unfortunately for the couple, whom did return home safely, the child was
not killed, but rather discovered by a group of warlocks, or renegade
mages, that had been seeking aid from the demon world.
They took
her in, raised her, took her as a sign that their hard work had not gone
in vain. Though as Mailyth grew older, the warlocks soon learned of
her weak magical presence and took her appearance as heretical. They
tried to kill her and unlike her magic, her resistance to it was strong,
thanks to the contaminated Satyr genes she had. She slew them in the
night, but not before one had drawn a blade against her and with her
blood mixing with their own, a powerful demon became intrigued.
A
portal opened before her, the demon stepping out and telling the girl
of all she could accomplish where she belonged, that she was not meant
to grace humans with her presence. Foolishly, she followed this high
demon, though her life didn't get better as he promised.
Mailyth
was treated as property, she belonged to the high demon and her
appearance was made to suit him. She was not allowed to fight back, or
was punished if she did so. Lesser demons viewed her as a mockery,
picking on her and teasing her only when they knew the high demon
wouldn't catch on for Mailyth never spoke of the ill-doings people did
to her.
The demon soon had a mission back in the realm of humans;
he wished to extend his lands and take theirs for humans did not
understand the bounty they had. He wished to rise up in the ranks.
Mailyth was taken along as he started with a village, killing their
leader and taking on his image only to use it to slaughter the kingdom
to give his demons proper vessels to use as hosts. Back in the world of
humans, Mailyth is continued to be used for whatever the high demon
desires, whether for his own personal pleasure or for missions, she
cannot refute and so she continues to do as he says.
