Description:

Leland understands the importance of diplomacy, even in the face of stupidity. He chooses his words carefully and stamps out any signs of resentment or smugness no matter how much he may actually feel about them. Generally he will be the first to try and diffuse a conflict between him and another person as he doesn't like the thought of someone thinking bad of him. If people provoke him he maintains his composure nonetheless, although his words may become passive-aggressive in return. Fantasy is better left for books and television in Leland's eyes. As a man grounded in reality he looks at things through a rational perspective and does his best to interpret the world in the same way.  His motto for achievement is (and always has been) to set high, but obtainable goals. Effort is meaningless if what you're working for is a pipe dream. He knows this by heart and puts determination into whatever task he is focused on finishing; however, being hard worker means that Leland views his achievements as a reason to have the ego that he does. His respect is rather limited, believing that his time is only for those of equal or higher authority. Because of that Leland will disregard matters that don't engage his sympathies. It isn't so much that Leland cares only for himself but rather that he prefers to spend his time on more pressing matters at hand (such as being a Death Investigator). He doesn't have very many friends because of this, his head in his books rather than people. Reaching out is something of a chore for him when it doesn't involve personal advancement. He keeps the guise of neutrality and when asked, acts happy for the sake of seeming as though he's on top of things. There are many times when he won't admit to certain things (such as feeling threatened) and those feelings sometimes manifest in his powers if not properly controlled (i.e. suppressed).

Equipment / Abilities
❶ Exorcism

❷ If a person has ever perused the horror section of Netflix or a local library they might find stories about priests using holy water and Bible verses to vanquish evil spirits from the bodies of mere mortals they might find that actual exorcism is less religious than one would expect. The process begins by securing the area or thing that must be exorcised and then by announcing his intent. There's no holy water involved (thankfully), but there is still the pesky matter of having Leland actually doing the act of exorcism. The biggest issue isn't the fact that Leland has to endure all these acts, but the fact that Leland actually has to connect on an emotional level to the foreign spirit's gripes. Though he doesn't need to agree, he needs to understand why the spirits are acting the way they are and either convince them to move out (the hard, but less taxing way) or simple push them back to the horrible synonym for Hell that they came from (the easier, more damaging way). After an exorcism one can find him weary and unable to focus, usually on the verge of passing out if it's been someone powerful. Too many exorcisms cause him to have seizures and in the worst case scenario, comatose.

Skills:

Exacerbated by the military, but originating from his running in high school, Leland is nimble which makes him hard to catch be it in combat or when playing sports. Combined with his natural dexterity and marksmanship, he makes for a tough duelist and even deadlier enemy. Additionally, he has kept his mind sharp by constantly teaching himself new subjects, mainly Cantonese, maths, and drawing.

Equipment:
Due to the strict gun control laws, Leland only has a 9mm handgun.

History
Year of Service: 65
Memories Retained: 84%
Current Occupation: Sales Associate at a clothing store
Before:

It is no secret that World War II caused a lot of deaths, both civilian and military, but for those who survived it wasn't merely a matter of moving on after the landscape was fixed. Formerly the second oldest of a family of five, he would have been the first of his family to have a higher education and being that they were only barely surviving the depression that swept England he knew he had a lot of pressure to succeed. If he could remember the hours that he studied in between working at his mother and father's tinkering shop he would have known that his mental health had been run ragged by the time that he began applying for schooling. Unfortunately the chance was lost once was conscripted. Both he and his father received the draft notice and despite his mother's protests, Leland went through, not knowing the trauma that laid ahead of him. Three years of warfare and three more of pretending that he didn't have that "battle fatigue" everyone was talking about left him fragile. The death of his father merely pushed him over the edge.

After:
He supposed that becoming a Death Investigator operated as penance for his moment of weakness and allowed him to do good deeds even if he would never see his family again. The proposal took a few hours of Leland trying to logically understand his position as well as the celestial implications of coming back to life after hanging himself, but he signed it nonethelss and asked to be relocated in Hong Kong under the presumption that Britain would continue ruling that small area for the rest of the years to come.

Greatest regret(s): Being weak. He still hates himself for what he did, so much so that he still hasn't ended his contract despite the unusually long amount of time he has inhabited Earth.
