History
Born in a small village on the border between Legeald and Adaleric, Kyren was raised in exile with his parents and younger sister.  His mother, who was his tie to the Elers bloodline, told him stories of their ancestors about how they founded the empire and ruled it before their house was destroyed so many years ago.  He loved the stories but didn't understand the danger.  His mother never told him that they were still being hunted, leading Kyren to believe that it had all blown over--they could never be as they once were, but it was all over.

This was largely the case for the first ten years of Kyren's life.  His mother impressed upon him the importance of keeping their lineage a secret.  Kyren was naturally a competitive child, and he saw keeping the secret as a game he wanted to win.  When he was six, and his little sister Aelinor was born, he taught her how to play the game as well.  He hadn't had any competition before, and he wanted to make the secret-keeping as much fun as possible by seeing who could go the longest without telling anyone.

But, in his eleventh year, all of that changed when the King's Guard found them.  One of the king's spies lived in their village, as spies did all over Erelan--to "keep the king's peace" as they put it--and that man, upon learning the heritage of the two children, immediately sent a letter to the king.  Their execution was ordered and the missive arrived three days later.  The soldiers attacked them without warning, in the dead of night, and killed Kyren's parents and sister before setting fire to the family home.  The boy witnessed it all, concealed in the cellar and watching through a crack in the door in the kitchen.  His family's screams echoed in his head long after they had died, but when all was finally silent, he heard the commander order the others to find him--no Elers bastard was getting out alive.

So he ran.  Down through the cellar and out onto the grassy field behind the village, while his home burned behind him.  At long last, the gravity and true danger of his lineage came crashing down on him, and Kyren realized that he would always be hunted, unless he either restored his house, left Erelan entirely or hid for the rest of his life.  Neither of the first two options seemed at all plausible to a boy of eleven, and so Kyren decided to hide.  He crossed the border into Adaleric and made his way to the Grey Sanctum, where he knew he would be safe.  He has been there ever since, living under a false identity and keeping his head down in case the soldiers ever come looking again.

Extra
Interests: Sword-play and horticulture
Likes: Nature and quiet
Dislikes: Crowds, unfamiliar places and guards of any kind
Extra:
  • Kyren carries a silver signet ring, inlaid with a large, lapis lazuli stone and engraved with the Elers family crest, with him at all times.  It is the only Elers heirloom to have escaped the fire--Kyren's mother having given the ring to him a few months earlier.  He wears it around his neck and tucked under his shirt.  It remains the only indicator of his true bloodline that he carries on his person.
  • Over the years, Kyren has thoroughly explored the crypt underneath the Grey Sanctum.  He has the layout memorized in its entirety and can quite easily navigate the catacombs, even without a source of light.
  • Kyren never learned how to swim.  He can dog-paddle and tread water for a short time, but that's as far as it goes.
  • He knows how to handle a sword, but Kyren has religiously stayed far away from any fighting and has never needed to use his skills.
  • He still has nightmares about his family's deaths
  • Even though letters and sums are common things for Sanctum children to learn, Kyren--driven by trauma to hide himself--never attended any lessons.  He is somewhat literate, having figured out the alphabet on his own by poring over old books, but anything longer than a few syllables is beyond him.
