Synopsis
It's a beautiful thing, magic is. Intricate spells, simple charms... they're all part of something greater.

Description
Ruana is a type of forest elf. She stands 5'4" in boots, has a slight build, and isn't very physically strong. Her skin is tanned from time spent outside and she has grey eyes. Green vines are rooted to her scalp and grow throughout her dark brown hair, which she keeps long enough to fall behind her shoulders. She dresses in practical travel clothes: green travel cloak and sturdy boots, though she does enjoy the occasional trinket. Although she's into her first century, Ruana is just entering adulthood by her people's standard. To anyone not familiar with elven aging, she could pass for 20 years.

Personality
Ruana is soft-spoken and careful. She rarely starts fights and will attempt to solve things with reason before resorting to force. She is studious and enjoys reading, a bit of a geek; she tends to get over-excited when talking about the applications of chaos theory in magic, or the potency of plants in alchemy. As a result of traveling alone for a while, she is adaptive and can take care of herself, however she feels bouts of homesickness occasionally.

Equipment / Abilities
Equipment:
-Green travel cloak, boots, walking stick
-Backpack with a sheet (for tents), spare clothes, spellbook, some food and some alchemy supplies (mortar and pestle, small cauldron, flasks)
-Pouch with a shoulder strap, containing spell components (dried herbs, stones, twine, candles, a mirror, a pen and anything else she can stuff inside.)
-A little money, mostly copper coins.
-A knife. Meant for ritual use, occasionally used in defense.

Abilities/skills:
-Ruana is a skilled mage. She’s very good with basic offense and defense spells (invocation and alteration). She specializes in druidic magic and recently began practicing conjuration. She loves experimental magic and trying to find new spells. Casting is taxing to the body or spirit, and the more complex/stronger spells are harder on mages than spells of their skill level. When Ruana burns out their energy for casting, she must rest for a while before trying more.
-She practices alchemy more than she practices cooking. The only food she can cook with any reasonable skill is soup because of similarities to alchemy.
-As a forest elf Ruana has an innate talent with plant life.

History
Ruana grew up in the Weyva Wood elf colony. At a young age she demonstrated magical skill. Though her father initially opposed it (being a traditionalist he would have preferred his daughter to learn a more marriageable skill like weaving), her mother encouraged her talent and placed her with a village magician to practice. Ruana loved her apprenticeship and learned rapidly, with a few mishaps but nothing too dire.

Roughly two decades later, Weyva was attacked by a vicious gang. Amoung the ranks were magic users wielding a dark power, the likes of which Ruana had never seen and could not stand up to. The warriors’ efforts to drive them off were in vain. The invaders left the forest scorched and sick, unable to grow much afterward. Ruana’s father, who died in battle and her tutor who was never found in the aftermath, and many other elves were slain or captured. A general distrust of magic settled over the remaining villagers, forcing Ruana and others like her to practice in secret.

For a few years after Weyva continued to decline as the forest did not respond to conventional healing and the elves lapsed into despair. Ruana decided she would search for a way to restore her homeland. If magic could break it, magic could fix it; it was just a matter of finding the right component. She told her mother, who only nodded sadly and handed her a green cloak. “Hide your face. Those fiends could still be out there.”
