At the dawn of time, the universe was nothing but void and dust. Dead matter and wasted remains, with no signs of life and no chance to ever develop. An absolute, desolate nothing. That is, with one exception. The first being, the nameless one that humanity nowadays refers to as The Mother. The Mother was a vast, inconceivable and endlessly powerful being, but doomed to soar in oblivion for all eternity, with nothing but the nothing to keep it company. The Mother had never known anything else, but She grew restless. She grew bored. As such, The Mother gathered all Her power and released it in the form of a massive explosive blast, spreading energy throughout the endless void that had until then been Her home. This incredible charge produced incredible results, lighting up the dead dust with power and producing a new substance that would later be dubbed Plasm. These three building blocks, The Mother's energy, the Plasm and the charged space dust, later referred to as Sparks, would create life, death and everything in between. The Mother began to build and in turn, the universe was born.
Special focus was laid on a single planet, people know it today as Earth. She took special care to fill it with life as it was build. Vast oceans and lush forests, a beautiful blue and cloud-filled sky. Most planets out there were simply left for dead, to just exist, but this one was special. It would act as The Mother's home from now one, not to mention the home of Her children. After all, even with all this matter she had created, The Mother was still lonely in creation. From Her body sprung small, small shards of Her own being, wispy, almost spirit-like creatures that would be called the Alzir. Like their mother, these powerful beings had the ability to manipulate Plasm and Sparks alike, letting them effectively reorder the building blocks of reality around them, though to a much lesser degree than The Mother Herself. They were Earth's first inhabitants and the first dominant race.
All things are made to end, however. The Alzir were powerful and creative, yes, but perhaps too much so. In their innate curiosity, they decided to take various aspects of the world, to extract the Plasm and Spark from it and make completely new, independent beings to lord over these concepts. A fun experiment, they thought. A total of six being were made this way, the essences of fire, of water, of air, of earth, of thought and of death. These six entities, born from the primal core aspects of Earth, became what humanity today calls gods. They were a simple experiment out of curiosity, nothing else and were regarded by the Alzir as vastly inferior beings to themselves. They were made servants, simple handmaids of their creators.
That is, until the god derived from the air, Rainun, objected. Rainun was not content as a simple manservant. He knew full well of his power and felt that, as he and his five siblings has been made from the Earth itself, they had greater right to it than the Alzir. They might have been made by The Mother's children, but for servant work. In his opinion, they had nothing they owed their creators. As such, he gathered his five siblings and schemed a coup. An action to overthrow the Alzir the The Mother and take Earth for themselves. Indeed, with Rainun as their leader, the gods led an organized attack towards their creators. Countless Alzir fell that day and, with a technique the gods had developed among one another, they managed to banish The Mother and her surviving children. As powerful as they were, the six gods could not match The Mother, so they went for the next-best thing. With the creator and the world's old lords gone, the gods claimed the planet for themselves.
And that is how the six gods, Rainun, Neniai, Tarios, Leine, Vanite and Athor, became the sole rulers of Earth, a spot they held for millennia. Together, they formed the Earth and made it a kingdom, not only for themselves but for countless creatures. Neniai and Vanite worked together to form life and to give it free thought, lesser beings not made for mindless servitude. They had created mankind. Rainun danced across the skies and brought clouds and winds, while Leine took the oceans brought water and nourishment to the earth. Meanwhile, Tarios stood among the flames to judge the new beings and offer the comfort of heat. Ultimately, Athor gave their creation somewhere to go after the end. Under the direction of the gods, Earth flourished, and so it did for centuries.
That is, until the year of 2192. (Years are counted with year 0 being the year the gods overthrew The Mother and the Alzir) The seal the gods used to keep The Mother away has weakened, worn down by She and Her children's constant attempts to break loose. The moment this game to the gods' attention, they instantly dropped their current actions and banded together to beat the old owners of the world back once more, knowing full well that if they were to escape, they would take Earth back, ruining everything the gods have built. Indeed, the seal broke, at numerous points. Alzir rushed out from their prison, eager to take reclaim their world. With all their strength, the gods fought back, now aided by thousands upon thousands of human followers. This was the First Grand War. With time and effort, the gods and humanity managed to beat the Alzir back a second time. However, when the hour of victory seemed to be nigh, what should not happen happened. The last seal broke. The grand creator, The Mother, was free once again. She struck the gods with fury never seen before. A single, crippling blow that wounded every god gravely, crippling them beyond recovery. With the last of their strength, however, the gods launched another, improvised seal to lock The Mother back up, a desperate attempt to keep their Earth. It worked, partially. The Mother herself was sealed, along with a large majority of Alzir, but a few Alzir were still on Earth and the gods knew very well that the weak, makeshift seal they had burnt their energy on would only last for a century, at most.
After this act, however, the gods crumbled. The wounds The Mother put on them along with the energy they used up for the seal was simply too much. Their powerful, divine formed cracked and collapsed on themselves, only leaving weak, spiritual "ghosts" of the gods' wills. The gods had fallen. Now, the world was without powerful deities to protect them, with Alzir still out there in the world. The gods did the only thing they could. They began searching.
For what, you may ask? Simple. For mortals, preferably newborn ones, that carried a very special spiritual wavelength. The potential to anchor their power. If the gods themselves could not protect the Earth against the still free Alzir and the countless monstrosities they had made to combat the gods, they would simply have to give humans the potential to do so. These children were visited by the lingering spirits of any one god, who gave them a small spark of their power. A spark that could grow and develop, to give the child further power. The power to fight. The power to protect. The children the gods appointed became the Chosen. These one-in-a-million individuals were tasked to fight the Alzir until the gods recovered and, if possible, seal them back up once more.
And that's where you come in. In this game, you play as one of the Chosen. The rare humans with the potential to shoulder the power of a god. While not as powerful as a god yourself, you are certainly powerful, much more so than any mundane human. With the monsters under the Alzir's commands, the Aberrants, around every turn, other traitorous Chosen and the Alzir themselves plotting to break the seal early and bring the true creator back, it's not an easy task.
But god damn, it's an awesome one.
The gods have fallen. Take their place.
