On another note, le wig has finally finished being colored! I didn't think the cell shading would pose as much of a challenge that it had @.@
My dedication to a character depends on my mood. If its bio is really short, I just really wanna RP. If it's really detailed, I'm excited about the character itself. Unfortunately this usually means that the better the character is, the less tempted to actually post I am, so my best characters are usually left underused. :P

Also, while I like having basic info about someones character, I don't actually want to know everything. For me, a pic and like two words describing them is all I need. I'm a fan of getting to know them in rp, because then I get to know them the way my characters do and I feel it makes my posts more believable. Frankly, I only make long profiles if an rp requires it. Personally I don't expect people to read my whole profile, and often, I prefer if they don't. That way they get to be surprised!
Also its a pet peeve of my when an rper lets meta knowledge(gained from the profile) of my character seep into their character's actions. The only exception to this would be if I'm rping with someone I know.

If I have the drive to make a detailed profile (by my standards) and I can really get into the swing of the character while making them, I'll be more driven to post them because I want to work them out even more and really see them interact with their characters. Then I have other characters (poor Lexxi) that I have great intentions while making, but they fall through and I can't get into really playing them.
As to what you're saying Nicole, I'm the same way. The only time I feed off another profile is if I reference them and they have some sort of past together (with the other person's ok, though mostly happens with Xavi). Depending on the character, I may not include all of the information about them on it if there's some 'deep dark secret' that I want to slowly be revealed throughout the game. As I see it, profiles are really used to get an idea of looks and to make other characters that will clash or get along with others. I don't think I really reference too much or mention such things unless they have an approved history together.
I usually only read other profiles under a select few circumstances:
1. I intend to make sure my character's personality isn't too similar to anyone already in the story.
2. I'm making an "all-knowing" character of sorts whom should be savvy to meta.
3. I know for a fact the creator makes amazing bios.
4. I'm making sure whatever the other character used isn't a complete asspull.
Otherwise, I typically don't bother unless it's to confirm them in one of my own RPs.

I love reading profiles, they're like crack to me. I'm pretty sure one of the reasons I used to GM so many games (once upon a time) was just to read the profiles.
I used to do that at an earlier time but then I'd have a certain idea of how the character should be based on its profile and when the player did it wrong (in my opinion) it caused an unnecessary amount of headaches.

I know how that goes >.> But then again, I can get like that on many topics so I just moan and groan for a bit then get over it (or at least try to).
I moan and groan sometimes too, however my feelings in those situations are completely different.

Hi thread, while we're on the conversation of characters, is it bad that I just want to clone and tweak one character for every roleplay?

Nope! There is nothing wrong with that, especially if it's a great character.
Nowadays, I try to reuse old characters since I've created so many. It's nice to just kick back and marvel at your old cation. It feels great to play then and modify them too! It's almost as if the character grows up as you grow up. It's quite fun to watch too! And besides, there are a lot of roleplayers out there that do the same thing. It's really neat to see how people choose to go about their roleplaying. Some, like myself, have a million characters while others, like you (Zomby) and a91nicole, have a smaller group of really toned and well suited characters who can pretty much be used everywhere.
Gotta love th diversity you find while roleplaying!
I see nothing wrong with that either! Sometimes there's no point in making a new character if one already fits, or sometimes it can be fun to throw a character into a new scenario. Xavi and I have done that a few time with a staple character of ours that haven't seen the limelight in some time.
The only inconvenience would be for you if RPs don't allow your character. Otherwise, go for it.
