A nomadic Aun, she travels from city to city with her daughter using her skills as a medic and midwife to satisfy her wanderlust
Thana wal'Deburg is an Aun woman. She has a muscular build however, it is not the build of one who tries to be muscular. It is a natural athletic look that comes from physical labor and constant travel. She stands at a fairly average height augmented by the tightly curled, black puff-ball hair that she wears in a pony tail on top of her head. She has shiny black eyes that are edged with crow's feet. Fine lines can be seen around her broad expressive mouth. These features place her age somewhere between 30 and 40. Her most prominent feature is not her large nose, or her wide mouth, but rather her large, masculine hands and big feet. They seem completely out of place on her otherwise average sized body- as if she was meant to grow more and just stopped.
She generally wears simple clothing- pants, a button down shirt or blouse, her trusty jacket and her well worn leather boots. She can be seen wearing a long traveling skirt and tank top in the hottest part of summer. She is rarely without the red leather, compartmentalized messenger bag she wears slung over her shoulder. The bag has been embroidered with geometric designs of glass beads and string. Inside the bag various tools, vials, pouches of dried herbs and other tools of her trade can be found.
Thana is a very skilled healer. While most of her skills seem to be nomadic and maybe a bit backward in nature, she is actually a trained battle field medic on top of being a midwife. She has knowledge of natural remedies as well as modern medicines and surgeries.She has a deep knowledge of plants and chemicals. With this pharmaceutical knowledge, she can make medicinal droughts and pills- though usually she simply purchases them when she is in town.
As a nomad, she has a very high endurance- able to walk for miles without getting tired. She also has a knowledge of basic self defense and combat. She carries a pistol, combat knife and a collapsible baton, both of which she can use with some proficiency. She prefers to avoid combat, but she can hold her own if need be. She also has knowledge of several poisons, though she has never had the need to use them.
She has a very minor innate focus in fleshcrafting. She can slow bleeding and stitch minor wounds together. It is difficult for her to use and she will only do so in the most dire of situations.
Thana is the daughter of Corsey wal'Deburg a nomadic Aun woman. She doesn't know who her father is as her mother never told her. It is rumored among the small band they traveled with, that her father is a high ranking religious man in the city of Cambria. It is also rumored that he is married. Her mother was a midwife who traveled from city to city delivering children. She was thought to be one of the best midwives of the Au. It was this that gave her some leeway in having a child unmarried.
Thana spent much of her childhood traveling all over the vast deserts of Au and occasionally beyond into the forests. She was raised in a small band of nomads- learning skills from many of them as they traveled the lands. She learned self defense from the men of the band. She learned how to hunt for her own survival, find water, cook and navigate by the stars. Thana was trained in midwifery and healing by her mother. In essence, she was raised by everyone in her band, not just her mother. While nomadic, the small band was actually quite wealthy- in part because of the demand for mother's skill as a midwife and in part because of the quality of the leather they made and sold in towns. As a younger child, she was disguised as a boy when they traveled- to keep her from being taken from the more violent nomadic groups, slavers and bandits.
When she reached adulthood, her mother sent her to train as a proper healer in Cambria. She was placed in the care of the church to learn medicine. She spent the next several years studying medicine, surgery and pharmaceutics. She spent some time searching Cambria for the man who was rumored to be her father, but without a name and only vague rumors of who he was, she quickly found herself at a dead end. She made few friends in the city- she never quite got used to the feel of city living and was an outcast among her peers. Her only friend during her time in the city was a boy named Killian de'Roe. He was also the child of a nomad band who had been sent to the city to live a religious life. However, he wanted to live in the city and pursue the path of religion. The two found a certain kinship because of how they were raised. Killian found himself romantically attracted to Thana, but she never returned those feelings.
After her training, Thana was apprenticed to a aging man named Luca Hargrove. She worked with him for two years, often being sent to the most horrific cases. Luca turned out to be a good teacher, if only because he was too lazy to do anything himself, instead letting Thana handle everything. While under his guiding eye, she acted as the midwife for several women. She quickly gained the reputation of being an excellent medic with a sadly horrible bedside manner. When her apprenticeship was completed, she joined the first nomadic band that found its way to Cambria, leaving the city.
In her travels, she eventually split off on her own, leaving the band to travel on her own. During these travels she worked as a healer to those who needed it, often taking contract on caravans, groups of mercenaries or with small nomadic bands. During one of these contracts, she acted as midwife to a young mother who had recently lost her husband. This woman, Shanna, had a small daughter of 1 year and was pregnant with her second. During the delivery, the band was attacked by bandits after the group's precious gems. Thana found herself working not only as a midwife, but also as a bodyguard to the mother while she labored. During the attack, she killed one bandit herself. Unfortunately, the Shanna was hit with a stray bullet while she labored. She used most of her power in fleshcrafting to try to save Shanna, exhausting herself and in the end doing no good to save her life. Without much recourse, Thana worked to save the baby by cutting it from her womb. The child, sadly, did not survive. This left Shanna's other child without a mother or father. Feeling responsible, Thana claimed the child as her own.
The girl, Abida, is obviously not Thana's flesh and blood- her skin is pale when compared to her and her features are completely different. Despite this, Thana refers to the girl as her daughter. The pair of them travel together, roaming the desert of Au and beyond. Sometimes, they hitch a ride with an airship and travel to more distant lands across the Vast Sea. Abida is now 8 years old and Thana is working all the jobs she can so she can save enough money to set Abida up in a proper dowry and home.
