She is like the the masterpieces that hang behind red-roped guards in dimly-lit French museums: People will travel thousands of miles to see it. People will kill for it. And it always goes to the highest bidder—always.

The important thing to remember is: Miki Imai, 18, is deceptive. She lies and cheats, hurts and hates. A psychologist might say that she does this because she feels vulnerable, but Miki will tell you that she does what she does because she can. Because she's worth it. Because she's fucking Miki

She doesn't mean to be hurtful. She doesn't sit down at a cafe scheming the ruin of other people's lives. But she is hurtful. She is mean and she is cruel. She sleeps with boys her friends are interested in (always calmly revealing the fact at lunch or dinner or between classes). She spreads nasty rumors about other girls (envious of their hair, their skin, their whatevers). And she bullies the weak (crushing them underneath her four-inch heels, laughing when they cry). 

And she will continue to laugh into the mouths of taken men (silver bands sitting with deceptive devotion on their fingers) and test her friends (pushing them to the edge as far as possible) because she needs to be reassured that she is more important, that they will always pick her over anyone else. Because, you see, all Miki wants is to know: How much do you want her? How badly do you still want her? 

She likes high heels, fashion, and make-up. She's likes nail polish, being adored, and fancy things. Fast cars, glamour, and secrets. She loves secrets.

Spiders, dirty dishes, and clingy people are just a few of the things she hates. She isn't fond of the great outdoors, birds, or sweet things. She doesn't like chocolate, her family, or most of the people she calls her "friends." She really doesn't, but that secret is her own.

Miki Imai, 18, is a Japanese heiress—a successor to the Imai Group. She is the youngest of four children—each sibling more impressive than the next and each more determined to be the next chairman. But, unlike her siblings, who are armed to the teeth with accolades and qualifications, Miki has nothing to her name (unless broken hearts and empty bottles are worth counting). She was never particularly good at school, wasn't gifted with any special talents (chess, piano, ballet—those all went right over her head), and, most importantly, she never wanted the headache of managing the group. 

She didn't need another thing weighing her down. 

She was born with a weak constitution and spent much of her early years at the attentive care of doctors, nurses, and beeping machines. Her parents, fearing for her future, refused to let her leave the house—hiring private tutors and, to an extent, friends. She was made to learn ballet, forced to practice piano, and endure long, boring chess lessons. She wasn't ever allowed to leave the house, but was encouraged to learn about the world outside—the world she couldn't see, touch, or smell. 

Because it was still important to know about it—because, one day, she'll have to work for the Imai Group even if she wasn't running it. 

HOW SHE GOT TO VELUBIAN ACADEMY:

She was sixteen when her father, realizing his mistake, sent her to study abroad. She was sick, but she shouldn't have been made a prisoner because of it. And, thinking she had improved greatly within the last years, he felt reassured in sending her away—if only for a little bit (and always under the watchful eye of her personal caretaker). 

He had thought long and hard about the school his younger child should attend before settling on Velubian Academy. And, considering Miki's proficiency with English (she may not have had a talent for the arts, but she was gifted when it came to languages), it seemed like an excellent place to go.
