Synopsis
I don’t fear dying, I fear never trying.

Description

Name: Thea
Nickname: The Lich King, Reek, Theodore
Age: Unknown (appears to be in her thirties)
Gender: Female (but gender fluid) disguised as male
Sexuality: Celibate for now, but she supposes she’ll have to make an heir somehow
Occupation: Forensics/Lich King
Species: Lich, previously human

Personality

She will not be taken lightly. She asks for a degree of respect, perhaps stemming from the fact that she never received any acknowledgement from her “father”. Despite being nigh immortal, she knows how easy it is to relinquish her title as ruler of the Lich. She often fears that she is not putting her limited time to use and tends to work both herself and her cabinet overtime in order to achieve her vision of perfection. She knows that it is tiring and that people hate her for it, but she has little concern for those who hate her because no one can match her. She dares any leader to outwit or out-charisma her. It isn’t about bread and circuses, she says, but rather that she knows the right people to be loyal to and the right price to pay.

Most importantly, she is never direct with what she wants, preferring to gently wrestle it out of other people’s hands with a mixture of compliments, passive-aggression, and quid pro quo. If something goes wrong she’ll know in her heart that some of the fault is hers, but tends to shift some of the blame onto others and talk about how things would have gone better if certain other people did things differently. In the words of others “failure is not tolerated, unless it’s [Van’s] my own.” Most attribute it to her inexperience on the throne while others see it as a childish trend that won’t ever be broken. Nonetheless, she picks herself back up after each misstep and gives (usually) earnest attempts improve her fellow workers. One can never really be sure with her.

If she had a personal life she supposes that these traits would spill into there too, but given her paranoia about being found out she’d rather eat her own foot than have friends. Her enemies on the other hand, well they know her tendency to grind people into the dirt.

Equipment / Abilities
Aside from her ability to raise the dead and her "posse" of undead guests she's pretty weaponless.

History

The year is immemorial to her, perhaps some time before the Europeans entered what would become Arizona. She had previously been a medium of spirits, going down the way of ’áńt’įįzhį (witchery way) as the first born daughter in her family. That was merely the beginning, a story that she doesn’t care to expand on, outside of her decision to become a Skinwalker. She remembers being twenty years old then, unmarried and having practiced witchcraft since she was but twelve. She’d only heard tales told by her grandfather who himself, contemplated the act (not seriously of course). As one of the few old and unmarried women she was as loved as she was feared: a strange woman with a strange affinity for the dark arts. They needed her only for her command of the spiritual realm, for terrorizing the other tribes they were at war with.

As soon as her apprentice was “ready” she would be replaced and forgotten. It didn’t sit well with her who wanted to use her power to take over more land and do something for her people outside of her confines. She delved into ‘azhįtee and tried everything to fight back against the neighboring tribes. She would do anything as long as her father could be proud of her. They were closing in on their settlement, ready to claim the land as their own when she did the impossible: slaughtered her mentor.

The power surged inside of her as she felt her bones breaking and reforming, allowing her to choose her form of whatever animal she wanted…or so she thought. After forcing the enemy tribes to retreat (with the help of a mysterious eagle) she became revered as the primary spiritual leader. For a few years she helped her tribe expand their land and used her eagle form to prey on unsuspecting victims, but it was not enough. She was too careless; she kept her mentor’s body for sentimental value and the evidence.  The chief discovered her treachery and burned her at the stake. It should have been over by then, except that it wasn’t. A day after her tribe threw her “cursed” bones away, an explorer known then as Mark Felbourn III, stole her remains and revived her by binding her soul to a chain necklace. It took time, but Felbourn taught his native language to her and through that he was able to learn about her past indiscretions and her, about what happened. Obviously she had been freaked out and first, but she didn’t have a choice except to get over it. She was to serve in his army as a lich-turned-necromancer.

He had been studying the magic of “savages” (a term that greatly offended Thea of course) and her command of it interested him enough to resurrect her and tell him the ways of “her people” and correctly guessed could transform. “You have hope!” he said as he continued to train her and become more friend than mentor and more complicated than friend. He was part of the ruling family of the lich community in England, though he was revered more as a researcher than a prince. He could do nearly anything, including offering to be Thea’s husband. He claimed that he loved her, more than his other “pets” and for a while Thea believed that. She thought that the bond they had with one another was on an equal plane…until he threatened her life.

It wasn’t an uncommon occurrence as necromancers (Felbourn included) often herded their liches around as servants, but when Thea defied Felbourn in front of his family he decided that a power play would be the best move to secure the throne and the respect of his company. The stigma was too much for him, she supposed but it was the last straw. She was tired of the way he kept flaunting his liches like a global zoo collection. She was tired of how he kept trying to dress her pretty, make her act like a socialite, and essentially everything.

Everything she had given up was for what? To become a slave? Another weapon to be disposed of?

The same night, she drew upon her ancestors for a chance at redeeming herself and moonlight hit her painting of Felbourn. She escaped thereafter, destroying all of his research and finding The Norn. In exchange her heritage she would gain freedom from Felbourn and the power to raise an army. Her skin and hair became bleached. She no longer remembered her human tongue, and the eagle form was gone. She would forever have the shadow of a memory of being amongst her ancestors, but would never be able to speak with them again.

Even so, she now had everything she needed to take down the Felbourn family. She disguised herself as “Theodore” (due to the fact that running away from masters was punishable by torture) and gathered momentum in the form of supporting liches, necromancers, and a resurrected army of her own. With enough fighters and magic, she performed a coup de ’teat on Mark’s father and instilled her (him) self as the sole ruler of the Lich Kingdom. The family was executed with the exception of one Mark Felbourn III. He was imprisoned and given enough time to recognize Theodore as the “dear, sweet Thea” he once knew. Though the only one to see through her façade he still had to ask why. Why hadn’t she killed him? Why did she disguise herself? Why didn’t she love him anymore?

“Because I can dear Mark. I can do anything I want now. Liches can do anything they want.”

Post private execution she continued to rule all liches, necromancers, etc. and played all sides to her advantage. Eventually the kingdom moved from an actual ruling class to being a brokerage firm. The liches scattered, some to Africa, some to Canada (herself included), and the rest is history. She’s had her identity, her rule, and pretty much everything about her questioned, but so far so good. This Halloween she wants to try and meet "The Devil" with a trip to The Devil's Masquerade.
