When the King Slayer came and took Kings Landing from the Targaryen's. The children that escaped lived on Dragonstone Island with someone Viserys had taken with them. The only babe of Robert Baratheon and Lyanna Stark. She was trained as an assassin and served the Targaryen's until she was seventeen and granted leave of her audience.

It was then that she was announced and the King's neice, even though he knew good and well who she was and as did she. Though it was done keep the Lannister's at bay, especially Cersei 'her Aunt by marriage'. No one at King's Landing knew that she was the ruthless assassin from the East, or that she moonlighted as the assassin Venom.

Now that the catis out of the bag sort of speak, Cersei now knows the truth of Merida's lineage. It is quite possible that it could put her into some danger in the mere future. So, while everything is going smoothly for now, war is coming and not even Merida or anyone else can prevent it. When you play the Game of Thrones, you play to win. Maybe one day she too will partake in it, until then she waits on the sidelines and in the shadows.
