He was sixteen when he graduated from Sidereus at the top of his class—he was four years ahead of the natural curve and leagues ahead of his peers. Much like Gareth Adler, the most celebrated Sabulum synergist, Maalik knew his way around the degree. He could summon walls to defend himself and, in the blink of an eye, turn the same walls into deadly forces. But Maalik is more than a mere shadow of Adler. Where Adler wielded the strength of gravity, Maalik specialized in metal manipulation and, even without the aid of gravitational pulls, Maalik isn't an easy target.

His specialty is Krav Maga, perhaps a nod to his heritage, but Maalik is knowledgable in a variety of mixed martial arts. In order to increase his effectiveness in the field (and to maximize his metal manipulation), Maalik picked up fencing, kendo, and all popular manners of swordsmanship.

MAALIK: I'm experienced. I know my way around a battlefield and I can easily carry my own weight and, perhaps, the weight of my allies.

MAALIK: To be strictly honest? Nothing. I have an excellent track record with Sidereus.

MAALIK: This is a rather subjective question. "Best" varies from assignment to assignment. If I was to be engaged in combat close to open waters, I would prefer the team have at least one Pulvius synergist onboard. But if we were fighting in the middle of a desert, I would rather there be someone else.

MAALIK: In general, I suppose, it's hot-headed, protocol-breaking agents. There's value to rules and when people dismiss them, it endangers everyone else on the mission. I won't stand for that.
