Seventeen years ago, Tamora Cole gave birth to her ex. Fiancé’s son in the back seat of a Ford SUV; the twenty-one year old couldn’t make it to the hospital because of heavy traffic. Her father had, had to pull the car over to the side of the busy high way and help his daughter have the boy right there; Greg Cole wrote down the time of the exact birth before an ambulance got there and helped with the rest. It was a story Cooper was told over and over, how he was special and had wanted to force himself into the world with a big bang. He could careless though; the story was one he found hard to believe, though there was proof of it in the news paper; “Woman gives birth to son on state high way” was the headline with a short paragraph about his mother and grandfather. The boy had always had more interests as he grew older; his father. The man’s name had been Dustin Tremble and he had died a hero in the Marines three months before he was supposed to be deported back to the States so he could marry Cooper’s mother. His mother told him stories of how her and his father would get in trouble by doing silly things and how much she loved him and missed him.
When Cooper turned seven, his mother stopped missing his father because she met a man named Nate Fields at her waitressing job. They had a fling that turned into them dating and then into her moving out of her father’s home with her seven year old son and into her boyfriend’s house. The man pretended to be nice around Cooper’s mother, but when the boy was stuck home alone with the man; he was often pushed around and forced to get the man a new beer or soda every time he ran out. The seven year old tried to tell his mother, but Tamora was too in love to care if the man was mistreating her little boy. She was with Nate for two years before she got pregnant with his son, the man ran off as fast as he could and left the woman in debt and living in an apartment she couldn’t afford on her own; she packed her things and her son up before she moved into her father’s new house with him. Later that year she gave birth to Cooper’s little brother, Kaidan, the name she had been thinking about naming Cooper at first before she changed her mind. She made sure she was good at taking care of Kaidan while still paying attention to her nine year old son, who was having trouble with math homework and getting in trouble for fighting in school. She didn’t understand why he was being so troublesome all of a sudden; and decided it was just because he was jealous of the new baby in the house. In reality, an older boy that lived on their street was bullying the nine year old after school; shoving him around and tripping him every time he walked by. This went on for a year until Tamora decided to walk to Cooper’s bus stop one day with Kaidan in his stroller, when she saw the older boy push her son into a mud puddle she was out raged. A month later they moved (her father included) out of the house and into a small apartment.
When Cooper turned thirteen, his grandpa died and they moved into another apartment closer to another school district. There, Cooper finally managed to fit in with other kids and made friends.
He started dating Marissa Holtz when he turned sixteen; she was his first girlfriend ever. His first kiss. His first time holding hands; but when it came to sex. She wanted it, while he didn’t feel that way about her. He refused to admit this of course and told her they just needed to wait. After eight long months, she went to him one day after school and kissed him before she told him she was pregnant. At first he was confused until he realized that it meant one thing; she had wanted sex so bad she had cheated on him with someone else. He demanded to know who; however, she wouldn’t tell him and begged him to stay with her. He dumped her on the spot.
