    Of Equal Talent

A 1x1 between A Simple Sigh and LostInOliviasWorld

    Bynn Novitat

    Lialyn Lopez

It was about three o'clock in the morning when Bynn had went to sleep. He turned off his computer and set aside all his other things before dragging himself into his room and collapsing onto his bed, falling asleep right then and there. Seven quiet hours later, the man awoke to find drool trailing down his cheek in a disgusting manner and that he had managed to to shimmy all the way over to the other side of the bed.

He groaned as he forced himself to sit up, running a hand through his long hair. He looked around his room to find it somewhat clean, before standing and stretching loudly. A scritching noise came from his stomach scratching as he went to his dresser and pulled out whatever was in the top drawer. Luckily for him, he paired his clothing with a shirt, pants and underwear, making his mornings as easy to navigate as possible.

About twenty minutes, a shower and a breakfast later, Brynn stood outside of his neighbor's door, knocking on it as loud as he could.

"Oooooooh, Lia!" he sung, his voice as off-key and sing-songy as he made it every morning. He didn't care for the way people his age would usually converse, over a cellphone and texting. He really did like having a real conversation. "It is time to waaaake uuup!"

I was having yet another bad dream.. I did every now and then.. I just tossed and turned. It was always about my parents , seeing them , then them in the hospital.. I would never forget that day.. I relived input in my nightmares, and always woke up with teary eyes. I jumped up, and rolled out of my bed. Finally.. Awake... "Oooooh Lia!" I groaned, and I walked out into the hallway. And opened my door. My hair was in a messy ponytail, I wiped my eyes, tears still in them. I hated when he saw me like this, he'd seem it a lot over the years. I noticed the look of concern in his eyes. "Nightmare.. No big deal.." I said, and I walked to my couch, and sat down. When he came inside, and shut the door, I smiled up at him. He was dressed nice today. I was just in a tank top, and sweatpants. Oh well.. "What are you doing today? Anything special?"

"Pah! It seems you have forgotten our plans for the day!" he stood in front of Lia, an overly exasperated expression on his face. He looked down at Lia before plopping down beside her on the couch.

"Remember? We were supposed to go get coffee and then to the art museum to not only be overly critical about the work, but also try to piss off the other attendees. You know, the usual Saturday morning crap before you've got to get to work." He leaned back and kicked his feet up onto the coffee table, putting his arms behind his back.

"So, nightmare? Care to talk about it?" He asked, looking over at her with that concerned look again.

I looked at him and my eyes widened, I checked the time. "We still have time! And .. I'll yell you on the way there, okay? I'll get ready real quick, alright?" I jumped up, and headed to my bedroom rather quickly. I got my nice white, one shoulder top on. And my mice dark jeans. I also slipped on my new pair of green and black vans. I brushed my hair, and left it down, I did very simple makeup, and was ready within 10 minuets. Kinda a record for people my age. "Okay.. Ready.." I said, and I walked over to him.. "Let's go." I said and I smiled with excitement. I was always looking forward to days with him. In 3 hours or so, I had a client at the shop, wanting angel wings done on her back.

Bynn rolled his eyes. I'll take the no answer on the last question as a 'no' then. A sigh blew off of his lips before Lia dashed into her room. He got up from the couch as the girl got dressed, going into the kitchen to grab an apple from the bowl of unkempt fruit on the counter. He rubbed it on his shirt before biting into it.

He could hear Lia clatter about in her room before she came out. He was done with the apple by the time she had stepped foot outside of her room and the remnants of the snack were dumped into the garbage can with a swift movement.

"Shall I escort you to the bike, mi'lady?" he asked, an English accent twinging his voice as he offered his arm to the other. It was an odd gesture, but it was rather much like Bynn to do such a thing. "And don't forget your helmet this time. It should be in your closet where I stored it..." he pulled his arm away for a moment before dashing over to the closet, throwing the door open and pulling the sleek black helmet from the top shelf down. He pretended to dust it before handing it to Lia.

"And off we go." he said, grinning.

I chuckled , and took the helmet. "Yes.. Off we go, to piss people off." I said with a smile. When we got down to the parking lot, I put on my helmet. I got on after he did, and I put my arms around his waist, holding on. "I haven't rode on your bike in a while.." I said. I looked around the city on the way to the art museum, and when the bike was at a stop in a parking place, I got off, and removed my helmet, I ran my fingers threw my hair quickly. "Stupid helmet hair.." I murmured. "I haven't been Jere in a while.. I said, looking around, admiring the new flowers on the outside.

"Funny you should say that," Bynn chuckled. "I was just here yesterday, helping with the landscaping. Reason why I was late bringing you lunch yesterday." he pulled the helmet off of his head and dismounted. He turned to her after putting the helmet away in the seat compartment, reaching out so that he could put her's away as well. "By the way, we're able to get free coffee from the museum's coffee shop today, so that's where we're headin' to." he took the helmet from her and stashed it away, before locking everything up.

He started across the parking lot towards the open building, the pillars making everything seem more dramatic about it. The man remembered a conversation he had once with Lia about the architecture of the place when they were in college. A smile touched his lips at the memory before he reached the doors, pulling one open to let the woman though.

"So, any exhibit you want to poke fun at today? I heard the sculptural exhibit is the most odd one they've had in the past three months."

I smiled with excitement. "Yes.. I love coffee. And that sounds like a plan." I walked through the door, he nicely held open for me. "Thank you." I said with a smile. I looked around the large room, hanging from the ceiling directing you to each room, I found the sign for the new exhibit. But I soon found my eyes looking at the coffee shop. When Bynn was inside, we both casually walked over. He ordered his coffee, and then I ordered mine. "Caramel Frappe, please." I said, and thanked the nice lady. I sat at the bar like table that you could look out the window from. I loved the seating here too. I looked over at Bynn. "So, how late were you up last night? You had no trouble getting up early it looks like." I asked him. I was not a morning person, everyone that knew me, knew that.

"Three twenty two in the morn. I had a design due by seven, so I figured I'd just work on it then instead of waking up early to work on it." He grabbed his black coffee, the cup warm in his hands and took a seat next to Lia. He spun some in the bar seat, doing some kind of silly dance with his elbows.

"And you?" he asked before taking a sip of his coffee.

"Really? Sweet. What kind of design? And..Uhm.. About 10:30. I was really tired, so I just kinda wiped out. " I said with a shrug. I stood when my name was called, and grabbed my iced coffee. I sat back down, and imitated the little elbow dance he did just to be silly. "Well.. I never really told you about my nightmare last night.. But it was about my parents again, me reliving the day.. I hate it.." I said, watching the city out the window. I took a drink of my coffee. It was really good today, the lady seemed to add extra caramel.. Sweet! I looked over at him and smiled faintly. "Do you ever have nightmares?" I studied his nice facial structure.. Gosh, he really was handsome.. And I had found a liking for him in the past week or so..

"A collection of three. Main characters for some Japanese RPG that." He swirled the coffee coffee cup some as it sat on the counter, spinning it with his free hand. His other hand went to under his chin, resting his jaw on it carefully to look over at the girl.

"So that's what it was about? Hmm. You need to read some happy stuff before going to bed." he sighed. Another sip of his coffee was taken, and he thought before answering the question placed in front of him.

"I do have nightmares. I mean, you've heard about my crazy vivid and wacky dreams, but sometimes they're frightening. There was one that I had just last weekend, in fact, you were in it. You had some giant red stone that possessed some kind of demon and it was consuming your soul, if I remember correctly. It was rather weird, and scared the living crap out of me." He laughed quietly. "But I know it is just a dream. They aren't memories for me." He sighed, closing his eyes before opening them again. He pulled his hand from under his chin and poked her nose.

    "Boop."

I looked at him, and listened. What an odd dream. "Wow.. That's trippy." I chuckled when he 'booped' me. "And with my dreams, ive tried everything.. They just happen, and there is no way to stop them. I finished my coffee, and noticed he was done also. "Shall we go make people hate us?" I asked, and I raised an eyebrow. I got off my stool, and threw away the empty plastic container. I waited for him to do so also, and we found our way to the new exhibit.. It.. Was, definitely odd, I should say. I waited for him to start. There were several other people in the room as well. "Any ideas?" I whispered. We were partners in crime... I swear. there was an older man, that kept glaring at us.. It seemed he knew what we were up to, I tried to ignore his hard stare.

A big gulp of the revitalizing liquid and the feeling of being waited on allowed for Bynn to finish up his drink as fast as he did. The slight burn at the back of his throat reminded him that it was a bad idea, but it was an idea nonetheless.

He walked with his hands in his pockets towards the exhibit, and the silence was tangible. There was an older man who kept shooting angry stares at the pair, as if he could read the minds of the two who just walked in. Maybe we just radiate mischief. he thought with a sly grin.

"I have an idea..." he whispered, leaning down into Lia's ear for a brief moment. He stood back up to full height and grinned at the old man before stopping in front of the same piece.

"Well! I wonder what this is representative o- Holy crap it is a water buffalo. I LOVE WATER BUFFALO." he turned to the old man with the odd smile on his face, his lips curled up from ear to ear and his eyes as wide as he could get them. "Don't you? They're wonderful creatures. Did you know that they serve water buffalo penis somewhere as a meal? It's kinda odd, isn't it?" He seemed to not shut up at all, talking nonstop.

I tried to keep my laughter at bay.. The old mans face was priceless, and other people overheard the conversation, making it funnier. He went on and on, and it got funnier the more he went on. The old man soon got tired of his shit, and walked away. I didn't think I could beat that.. It was my turn. I walked over to a woman, and I stood close to her, so my shoulder was touching hers, I just stared at her.. And when she took a step back, I tool a step forward.. She also soon left.. Her face was really funny also.. Its hard to keep a strait face, but it did it. Hurray.. Now.. Who next. This one woman was also glaring at me, I walked over and looked at the price she was looking at. "God.. What is that?" The womens glare hardened. "Come on, what is it?" I asked, nudging her. "Art!" She yelled at me. Wow, this was fun..

Bynn was able to go on for another ten seconds or so before the man had turned and left, probably to another exhibit. He held a satisfied grin on his face. He watched Lia's antics for a little while before a blue uniformed man placed a hand on his shoulder. Bynn turned back, an eyebrow quirked up, to find not only a security guard, but the same old man from earlier.

"I'm going to have to ask you to leave." the guard said, his voice low and his words carefully spoken.

"Well, allow me to grab my friend over here, and we shall get out of your hair." He smiled and then nodded towards Lia.

The guard let go of Bynn and then allowed him to walk over to Lia and grab her arm, tucking it under his own carefully. He then went to the exit door, pushing it open and leaving.

"That... Was fun while it lasted. I think that's a record for us! Less then ten minutes, right?" He grinned widely and shook his head. "But they won't let us back in until the guards change shifts. That's for anther couple of hours, so anything you wanna do? I was thinking stopping by the art studio..."

When he locked arms with me, I knew that we had to leave. I chuckled when we got outside "Well. I have a client at the Shop in a couple hours. So yeah, let's go to the art studio. I still have time." I said, and I waited until he unlocked the helmets, and I grabbed mine, and put it on. I waited until he got on, then I did after him. On the way there, I thought about how much we had in common, we both loved art, similar music, and always knew what we were thinking. Honestly, if we dated it would last forever. I told him everything, he told me everything. We have not talked once really about our feeling are for one another. And I just thought that since he's never brought it up, that he had no intrest. When that last thought went through my mind I just dropped the thought, oh well..

"Studio it is." He said after unlocking the compartment and pulling out the helmets. He pulled his on, got on the bike and Lia got on behind him. She wrapped her arms around him and they were off towards the art studio, a place that he rented that was filled with all the art supplies he could find. It was his father's, before his parents had moved to Europe. He pulled up to the building and got off, finding the perfectly glass building to be absolutely beautiful, as he always thought it was when he came.

"Can you go unlock everything and start the air conditioning? I'll go pull my bike into the shed." He took her helmet and stowed it away with his, and then kicked up the kickstand and started to roll the motorcycle into the shed behind the building.

He came back, running up to the door and sliding in. He pulled off his shoes and walked in, walking on his heels to keep from falling.

"There's some new easels and canvases in the storage room, as well as some new oil paints." he sung.

I always enjoyed going here, it was where I started my tattoo drawings. When I had done what he asked, I went to a desk, that was by his, and grabbed paper, and a pencil. I loved drawing black and white tattoo ideas. I honestly had no tattoos, I felt that I should soon, because I want them, and I wouldn't look like a noob on the job. I sketched out a tattoo idea for myself. It was a beautiful black flower, and then on the stem of the black rose, instead of spikes on it, it had barb wire wrapping up it. And on the falling petal was 'never forget.. Gabrielle 12-5-09' which was my mothers name, and date she died. The flower represented my mother, and the barbed wire was there because she was a women that would always defend herself. "Hey, Bynn, I want to get this on my arm, what do you think?"

"Its beautiful... But I think it would look good on your shoulder blade." Bynn came up behind Lia and gently tapped the back of her shoulder, where he told her where he thought it would look better. He leaned on the back of her chair, his chin resting on her shoulder, studying the drawing for a moment.

"And what about some color? Maybe just a slight tinge of red on the petals for the memories you have of them." He offered his suggestion quietly, his gaze going to Lia's cheek before he pulled his face from her shoulder and stood up straight. "But they're just suggestions. Do what you want." he offered a grim smile before going back over to his desk. He pulled open a drawer and then took out some paintbrushes before going to the easel that he had set up the afternoon before.

He had some stretched water color paper on the easel, and a large pallet of colors in his other hand. A small cup of water sat in a small holder, meant just for it on the arm of the easel, making everything easy access for him.

He was working on a painting of a friend and his fiance as a wedding present for the two.

That was not a bad idea.. "Okay.. I'll add something like that.." And the shoulder thing I liked also. I would have to call up my friend and make an appointment with her. "That's why I ask for your opinion, you always add something better." I said with a smile. I grabbed a red pencil, and a soft shade of red. I felt my cheeks turn a little red when he rested his chin on my shoulder for a few seconds. I set that drawing aside, and just doodled random things, until I filled a couple pages of my thoughts, but they were drawings instead. A few hearts here and there. I stood, and I walked over to see what he was working on. "Wow.. That's awesome.." I said. I was never good at Painting. I checked the time on my phone. I had 30 minutes to get to the shop. Which was convienently across the street. "I have to go to the shop. I'll text you when I'm done, alright?" I said heading for the door.

"Okay. I think I'll have lunch ready when you come back. I forgot what I have in stock in the kitchen." He turned to his painting and finished up the basic sketch. Now, he went over some of his lines with a dark marker, the tip brushed so that he could thicken and thin his lines where ever. When he was done with the few lines, he started with painting the background, a park setting where the picture was taken. He smiled some at the memory of the day, hanging out with the couple. He was definitely a third wheel when they were hanging out, but he was absolutely fine with it.

As he started to layer up the colors, he got to thinking. He imagined himself in his friend's shoes, next to some woman whom he was going to get married to. He liked the idea of possibly getting married, but to who? He didn't go out much, and in fact, the only girl he really knew was Lia! And of course, he liked Lia, but it was more of a sisterly kind of love, right?

Wrong. he told himself. The idea was a surprising one. He stopped what he was doing and actually thought on it. He dipped his paintbrush into the water and shook his head. You've liked her. Ever since the third freaking grade, Bynn. A sigh left his lips. The inner voice was right.

Then how the hell am I supposed to tell her? I mean, we're just friends. We've been friends for a long time. Wouldn't that make things awkward? I mean, who would want to ruin such an awesome friendship?

    Oh get over yourself-

    Never.

Fine. Maybe you should just ask her out for drinks. Probably call it a date. See how she reacts.

Bynn scoffed. That's a terrible idea.

Nevermind then. You're on your own.

The conversation Bynn had with himself ended, and he started to paint again.

When I got to the shop, the lady told me she wanted, and we had spoke over the phone about it, so I already had it drawn out. I showed her, and she was in love with it. I had her sit on the chair, and adjust herself so I could place the outline of the tattoo on her back. When I did so, I started to tattoo, what I loved the most. It took a lot of shading, and detailing to where I was happy with it. "Okay, All done." I told her, as I wiped the extra ink off. She looked in the mirror, and hugged me. "Thank you thank you!" She told me. She also said she would definitely go back to me for more. I explained to her how to take care of the tattoo. She paid me, and I got out my phone, and texted Bynn. "Okay, going over." I waved to my other friends who were also tattoo artists in the shop, and I went across the street, to his art studio. I walked in, and saw his finished painting. "Wow... That's so incredible.."

When Bynn got the text, he put down his things and went into the kitchen. He opened the fridge, and pulled out the ingredients for sandwiches. From the pantry, he picked up the bread and two bags of snack sized chips and went over to the island in the middle of the kitchen to start preparing the meal. He first toasted the bread and then made them quickly, making them gourmet sandwiches. Lettuce, avocado, tomatoes and all kinds of things were put in between the toasted bread, and then he dumped the bags' contents onto the plates and brought them out to the work-space, where he found Lia marveling at his work.

"Yeah, it's George and Kiana. Did I tell you that I'm going to be their best man for the wedding?" he asked, going over to the couch next to the glass wall. He placed one plate onto the coffee table- Lia's- and then sat down and started to feast on his own.

"did you get a picture of the work you did? You should be creating a portfolio, remember? There're better places for you to be working than that sweet little dinky place." he smiled up at her in between bites.

I knew I would never be good at painting like that.. Maybe I should practice, or have him teach me. "No, but that is really cool. When's the wedding?" I asked, and I walked over to him, an sat down by him, I took the plate with the delicious looking sandwich, and I took a bite. When I was finished with the bite, I looked at him. "Thanks.. This is good." I told him. I took my phone out, and showed him the angel wings I did on the woman today, she let me take a picture of them. "I'm working on one.. And I honestly want my own shop.. I have money set aside and everything.." I wouldn't consider myself rich, but my parents left me quite a bit of money, so if I wanted to open up a shop, it honestly wouldn't be that hard. I had never really thought about it like this, maybe in a few weeks I'll look into it more.. I soon finished my sandwich, and I got up and I set it in the sink, I rinsed it off, and washed it. I dried it, and put it back on the shelf. I sat back down beside him. I smiled, and for some reason, my cheeks turned a light pink..

"The wedding's in two months. You know how weird they are right? George was telling me about how instead of getting rings, that they want to get them tattooed. I referred them to you, I hope you don't mind." He got up himself when he was done, rinsed off the plate and put it up as well. He plopped back down, crossing one leg over the other, grinning back at Lia.

"What would you name the shop? Something awesome, I hope." he chuckled. He leaned back into the cushion, his hands behind his head and eyes going up to the cieling. He closed his eyes and sighed.

"Anyway... Got any plans tonight, Lia?" he asked, remembering the suggestion that his inner voice gave him.

"That's awesome, I'd love to do that for them. Thanks." I told him, smiling. When he sat back down I shrugged "I know it will be awesome.. Something like Electric Tattoo.. I don't know." And the question he asked after made me raise and eyebrow. Was I busy tonight? No.. "Nope, I'm free. Why?" I asked, and I wondered if he would ask me out.. Eh, I never try to get my hopes up for anything like that really. Look at him, he is very handsome and cute.. And I'm just.. Bleeh.. I've never been lucky enough to have a guy I like ask me on a date. In high school, I always went to dances with friends.. And at tolo, guys said no. I just didnt have good luck..

"I was hoping you'd go for a drink with me. You know, just us." Bynn kept his gaze up to the ceiling, not exactly sure how he was supposed to look when he asked her this. "The place I go to has live music tonight." He added, as if to add more reasons as to why she should go with him.

A slight glance off to the side where Lia was and he could feel his ears warm up. Damn, I'm an idiot he thought, looking back up. He sighed before shaking his head slightly, to himself.

"Like.. A date?" I asked, blushing, and smiling, "Well, of course I'll go with you." I said, he looked nervous.. I knew because that's when his bears turn a little red.. I honestly thought it was really cute. Why was he nervous? Well.. I guess asking your friend of 18 years out on a fate was pretty nerve wracking. "That one place we went for your birthday?" I asked, if it was, I knew where to go. I was looking forward to it.. I had a nice outfit for it also. My cheeks grew pinker, and pinker the more I thought about it.

"Yeah, The Stray Cat? That place." The Stray Cat wasn't just any kind of place to get drinks. It was set in an old abandoned ballroom, and the live music was usually some form of really good ballroom dance music. With Bynn's odd taste in music and his love of ballroom dancing, the place just seemed to fit him. The place had nearly the same air about it as the man did: fun confident, yet serious.

"Remember the dance that I taught you a couple of weeks ago when I had to practice for the ballroom dance thing? And my dance partner was out sick? I hope you remember it." A playful grin danced across his face as he was able to look at her again. The pink was still there, but it wasn't quite as obvious. Now that Lia had accepted the offer, he had a bit more confidence.

I thought for a moment.. That dance was a bit of a blurr, but I would figure it out.. YouTube! "Oh, yeah. I remember it. Easy." I said, nodding. "What time?" I asked. I checked the time. Three 'o' clock. Wow.. Already? Well we have done a lot today if you think about it. "I'm exited.. It will be fun.." I said. I still wasn't sure if it was really a date or not. I'll just dress nice as if it was one. Like I said earlier, I was starting to develop feelings for him.. Think about it, we would be the best couple ever!
