The period
of history we call the Dark Ages was bleak, but not for the reasons we
think. At the beginning of the Dark Ages
in the fifth century AD, Lucifer, the fallen angel condemned to rule over Hell,
grew weary of his post and simply walked out, locking the gates of the
underworld behind him. New souls
destined for Hell could no longer enter, and instead would remain on Earth,
lost and angry; they did not belong in the land of the living. Exorcists, priests, witchdoctors, and various
medicine men of all faiths tried in vain to rid the world of these souls, yet
their attempts simply angered the spirits(or, as they are colloquially known,
Walkers) further. Also, many of the demons
and tortured spirits who resided in Hell have escaped. No one knows where Lucifer is hiding, and
only Lucifer knows where the key to the gates of Hell is.
It is said
that Lucifer has taken on a human form and is walking the Earth, preferring a
mortal life among humans to an immortal one among demons. Only he knows where the key to open the gates
of Hell lies.
The Creator
Himself has sent messages to a select few.
These Prophets dream of the fallen angel and his whereabouts; others
dream of ways to send a wandering soul to Hell; still others dream of the
Hellgate’s key. These few come from all
parts of the world and from all walks of life; most are priests or monks of
some kind, from various religions. They
have been given the task of finding Lucifer and his key and reopening the gates
of Hell.
