Morthal is a small northern town in the middle of a vast marsh. It is a remote place with a small populace. It doesn't even have a general store. There are however a miller for lumber, a potion-maker who experiments with her own ingredients, and a small tavern owned by a woman who complains about how little happens here.
In-game, recent events are more interesting. The most pertinent news is the death of the wife and child of Hroggar in a house fire. The claim is that it was an accident, though some suspect foul play. Hroggar is now living with another woman, known to many as his mistress, with the grave soil still fresh.
That aside, many villagers are upset about Jarl Idgrod's choice in a recent wizard in her employ, Falion. Already looked down upon for her claim of 'visions' that come to her in her sleep, her choice of court magician puts many villagers on edge. They do not like or trust the newcomer, and the man himself is clearly aggravated by their closed-mindedness.
To delve beneath these plots is to discover that at the heart of this town is a vampiric infestation. Hroggar was thralled into murdering his family for the sake of his undead lover, Alva. The mage Falion has made some kind of study of vampires, and though it is difficult and circumstantial to discover the secretive wizard's true purpose, it is revealed that he has a method for curing vampirism.
