Classic Fantasy Adventure
The land of Denelm, the most legendary island in the mortal realm. Home to the gods themselves, as some say. They are not entirely wrong. Designed to be the location housing the portal to their own realm, the four Greater Gods gathered all their power and creativity to give life to their largest and most ambitious project yet, an entire continent. They invented fauna, and flora, and everything in between in to make it an exotic and dangerous place, one not meant for mortals. Each had a shrine representing them, one for each point of a compass. At the center of the landmass, in the midst of a lake stood the massive shrine housing the portal.
But this beautiful land was not given the eternal peace they meant for it. Sundim, one of the Greater Gods made a bargain with the king of the demons. Only one of the gods could control the tri-dimensional portal. So after the other three returned to the realm of the gods, She severed it's connection, preventing them from returning to realm of mortals. She then opened it into realm of the dead, allowing the Demon King and his horde of undead and demon followers into the human realm. Under the one condition that they would come to her aide when she called for it, the demons were set loose. Sundim and the Demon King vanished to places unknown.
But that's ancient history, every man, woman, and child knows the story. As do the thousands of Denelm's inhabitants. But there is part of the legend that very few surviving mortals know, that the gods weren't completely shut out. They were trapped with the main source of their power, giving them nearly limitless potential. Hundreds of mortals were imbued with the Gods' power, giving them superhuman speed, strength, and mental capacity. But not a single one of them had access to these improvements, nor did they even suspect they had them.
1443 years after the sealing of the portal, in the midst of the great war of the nations, many individuals discovered their 'powers'. The myth began that they were 'chosen by the gods', and were commonly referred to as 'heroes'. They were promptly elevated to high ranks in military and some managed to become nobles. The prospect of individuals chosen by her worst enemies holding positions of power was a scary thought for Sundim. She called in her boon, with the Demon King as her general, and her powers supporting him. Thus began the 'War of Darkness'.
The characters we'd be playing as would be the next generation of heroes, slightly better than those before them, but they wouldn't know they were heroes at the start.
This is just an interest check, but also part brainstorming. If you like parts of the idea, or have a better idea, or maybe something that I should add/change, please let me know your thoughts. I love feedback.
